The study was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial conducted at the Queen's College Hospital in London. Patients who were recruited from October, 2003, in accordance with the routine medical practice guidelines, were enrolled in the study. The study period was 5 years (2003–2014) from the start of the study to December, 2013. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were eligible for the study if they were of Eastern European descent, were able to speak English and had a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, and were aged between 18 and 40 years. Inclusion criteria were: (1) male participants with a mean age of 58 years (range: 50 to 79 years); (2) a history of PAH, heart failure, or PAH-related heart failure; (3) with a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension and/or severe heart failure; (4) who were able to perform oral medication therapy (Viagra® and Cialis®) before the study (≤ or = 5 days before randomization); (5) who were willing to take sildenafil for 5 days; and (6) who had not been prescribed any nitrate medication prior to the study. Patients with severe heart failure were excluded from the study.
